Camp Medical Team 

Position Overview 

As a member of our Camp Medical Team, you’ll play a vital role in creating a safe, supportive, and fun environment where children with arthritis can thrive. Serving as a Nurse, Physiotherapist (PT), Occupational Therapist (OT), Pediatric Rheumatologist, or Social Worker, you’ll provide expert medical care at our camps located in Alberta, Nova Scotia, British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec. 

In this role, you’ll collaborate with the broader healthcare team and assist campers in managing their individual needs. Your presence will bring peace of mind to campers, their families, and staff, fostering confidence and independence. By empowering campers to embrace new experiences, you’ll help them create lasting memories and meaningful connections in a vibrant and joyful setting. 

Time Commitment 

This role requires a five-night commitment at camp, with all Camp Medical Team volunteers being "on-call" during camp hours and remaining onsite throughout the duration. Mandatory pre-camp training is required for all positions. 

The Camp Medical Team may also be asked to assist with camper registration and help monitor the camp bus. Pre-camp training is mandatory for all team members. 

Key Areas of Responsibility -All Camp Medical Team Members 

  • Oversee campers’ arthritis care and overall well-being.

  • Promote healthy living by encouraging hand hygiene, sun protection, and illness prevention. 

  • Keep detailed records of treatments, medications, illnesses, accidents, and any incidents. 

  • Monitor campers’ health and address concerns, communicating with parents throughout camp if needed. 

  • Collaborate with Arthritis Society Canada staff and camp teams to ensure the wellness and safety of all campers. 

  • Ensure a professional and safe relationship with campers, maintaining boundaries that do not extend beyond the camp experience.

Prepare for the last day of camp and report any health concerns to parents at camper pick-up. 

Key Areas of Responsibility -Camp Nurse 

  • Oversee campers’ health care, including administering medications, treating minor ailments like colds, homesickness, and injuries, and responding to emergencies. 

  • Monitor campers’ health and address concerns, communicating with parents as necessary.

  • The Camp Nurse is "on-call" during camp hours, including some overnight shifts, and remains onsite throughout camp.


Key Areas of Responsibility -Camp Pediatric Rheumatologist 

  • Supervise the arthritis care and safety of campers. 

  • Assess and treat common ailments and follow up on any medical/physical concerns. 

  • Monitor the health and wellness of all campers. 

  • Meet with Arthritis Society Canada staff, volunteers, and camp nurses/programming staff to discuss camper health and well-being. 


Key Areas of Responsibility -Camp Social Worker 

  • Assess and manage mental health concerns such as homesickness, anxiety, depression, and other issues that arise. 

  • Share important mental health updates with parents/guardians when necessary. 

  • Empower the counseling and nursing teams with strategies on mental health, conflict resolution, and fostering positive connections.


Key Areas of Responsibility -Camp Physiotherapist or Occupational Therapist 

  • Assess and treat common aches, pains, or concerns for campers and volunteers. 

  • Provide education and consultation on accessibility, ergonomics, and pain management at camp. 

  • Support pre-camp training as needed. 


Desired Qualifications, Skills, and Attributes -All Camp Medical Team Members 
  • Active license with the regulatory college in the province of the camp. 

  • Valid CPR-C and Standard First Aid certification. 

  • Satisfactory completion of a vulnerable sector check. 

  • Proof of insurance coverage through professional body. 


*All certification and proof of current professional liability insurance must be provided before camp. Arthritis Society Canada will provide additional professional liability insurance to ensure that medical staff are covered to volunteer at camp.  

Desired Qualifications, Skills, and Attributes -Camp Physiotherapist (PT) or Occupational Therapist (OT), Social Worker 

  • Experience working in a camp setting is an asset. 

  • Recent pediatric experience, working with children with chronic illnesses, and in particular, juvenile arthritis.


Desired Qualifications, Skills, and Attributes -Camp Pediatric Rheumatologist 

  • Experience working with pediatric patients, particularly those with juvenile arthritis (as relevant to the role).

  • Pre-approved expenses such as the purchase of specific supplies required for campers, not supplied by the camp. 

  • Honorarium ranging from $250/day or $1500 for the camp week.


Availability and Working Environment: 

In addition to the camp week, the volunteer will take part in camp orientation in preparation that includes a virtual connect to review policies and procedures, emergency management and camper files. This may also include an onsite pre-camp. They will also take part in the debriefing session either in-person or teleconference and complete online evaluation survey with Arthritis Society Canada after camp.
